Light tanks Pz.Kpfw. II were the backbone of German armoured units in the mid-1930s and played a significant role during the invasion of Poland and the French campaign of 1940. The first series, i.e. the Ausf. a1, a2 and a3 versions, were produced in limited numbers and served mainly for training and in early combat operations. Nevertheless, they had already begun to incorporate modern equipment features, including smoke grenade launchers, which allowed crews to conceal tank movement and take cover when retreating.
