1/48 Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 Early. Prod. advanced kit

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9, nicknamed ‘Dora’, was one of the most significant German fighter aircraft of the final phase of the Second World War. It was developed as a direct response to the need for a more powerful aircraft capable of countering the increasingly formidable Allied aircraft, particularly at high altitudes where the air-cooled engine of the original Fw 190A series was inadequate. The designers therefore opted for the Junkers Jumo 213A liquid-cooled inline engine, the installation of which required the nose and fuselage to be lengthened — hence the characteristic slender profile that distinguishes the “Dora” from its predecessors at first glance. The result was an aircraft with significantly better performance at medium and high altitudes, which the Luftwaffe deployed, among other things, to protect the Me 262 jets during take-off and landing, when these aircraft were at their most vulnerable.

The early production version D-9, which this kit focuses on, differed from later series in a number of design details — such as the cockpit layout, armament and surface finishes — and it is precisely these nuances that MiniArt has captured in the Advanced Kit series with an emphasis on accuracy. The kit features highly detailed plastic parts supplemented by photo-etched components, which allow for a more faithful reproduction of the fine details of the cockpit and the aircraft’s exterior. Three decal variants offer a choice between different historical aircraft and their colour schemes, giving modellers the freedom to decide on the final appearance of the model.

The 1:48 scale is one of the most popular for World War II fighter aircraft — the resulting model is large enough to capture the details, yet remains manageable in size. The Fw 190D-9 is usually built in this scale in the typical late-war Luftwaffe camouflage, i.e. a combination of grey-green and blue tones with a characteristic wavy pattern on the sides of the fuselage. The photo-etched parts are suitable for more experienced modellers and significantly enhance the authenticity, particularly in the cockpit, landing flaps and other fine structural details. The kit does not include the paints or adhesives required for assembly.
