1/72 F4F-3 Wildcat
Arma Hobby 1/72 F4F-3 Wildcat is a die-cast plastic model of a WWII US Navy and Marine Corps fighter aircraft. The kit is based on all-new molds created specifically for the F4F-3 version and includes plastic parts, transparent parts with Arma JIG system for easier installation of the cockpit, cockpit and wheel masks, decals with three variants of markings and a code to download the digital file. The package does not include the paint or adhesives needed for assembly.
The Grumman F4F Wildcat was one of the key fighter aircraft of the US Navy and Marine Corps in the first half of World War II. The F4F-3 version featured in this kit was the first fully combat-capable variant of the Wildcat with a more powerful engine and improved armament. It entered service in 1940 and became the standard deck fighter on US carriers at the time of US entry into the war. The F4F-3 took part in every major naval battle in the Pacific in 1941 and 1942, including the defense of Wake Island, the Battle of the Coral Sea, and the Battle of Midway. Although it was weaker in performance than the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, it stood out for its rugged construction, reliability, and ability to survive heavy damage. Wildcat pilots developed tactics that exploited the machine's strengths-particularly armor, endurance, and firepower-and compensated for its inferior maneuverability. The F4F-3 gradually gave way to a more modern version, the F4F-4, but its role in the critical 1941-1942 period remains historically vital.
Arma Hobby's 1:72 scale kit is based on entirely new molds created specifically for the F4F-3 version, accurately capturing the design differences of this variant from later types (F4F-4, FM-2). The transparent parts are equipped with the Arma JIG system, which facilitates accurate fitting of the cockpit and eliminates common problems with gluing transparent parts; these parts are also compatible with earlier Arma Hobby Wildcat kits. Cabin and wheel masks are included for ease of painting.
The kit offers three historically accurate variant markings: the F4F-3 "F-5" from VF-2 of the USS Lexington, piloted by Lt. Albert O. Vorse Jr. during the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942 - the first major naval battle fought entirely by aircraft; F4F-3 BuNo 4019 "211-F-11" from VMF-211, which participated in the heroic defense of Wake Island in December 1941, where a small group of Wildcats faced outnumbered Japanese invaders; and F4F-3 "F-13" from VF-3 of USS Lexington in early 1942, a period of intense operations in the South Pacific. All three variants represent machines from key moments of American wartime deployment in the Pacific.
The 1:72 scale allows for a detailed rendering of the compact deck fighter with ample space to highlight typical features - the robust hull construction, the distinctive main landing gear folding to the sides, the four wing machine guns and the operational wear and tear appropriate to the harsh conditions of deck operations. The package includes a code to download the digital file. Paint and adhesives required for assembly are not included.
