MIGHTY EIGHT: 65th Fighter Wing 1/48
Eduard 1/48 Mighty Eight: 65th Fighter Wing is a plastic model of American fighter aircraft P-51D Mustang from World War II. This limited edition offers machines from the 65th Fighter Wing of the Eighth Air Force over Europe. The kit includes decals for aircraft from the 4th FG, 355th FG, 361st FG and 479th FG. The package does not include paint or glue needed for assembly.
The North American P-51D Mustang is one of the most famous fighter aircraft of World War II and is considered one of the key factors that allowed the US bomber force to operate successfully over Europe. The combination of the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine (produced under license as the Packard V-1650), aerodynamically advanced design and long range made it an ideal escort for heavy bombers in daylight raids over Germany. The P-51D featured a bubble cockpit providing excellent visibility, six .50 caliber (12.7 mm) machine guns, and the ability to reach targets deep in the enemy rear. For the pilots of the Eighth Air Force, the Mustang became a symbol of air superiority over the Luftwaffe in the final phase of the war.
The 65th Fighter Wing was part of the Eighth Air Army and included several fighter groups that operated from British bases. Among them were the 4th Fighter Group (4th FG), one of the most famous American units with roots in the RAF's volunteer Eagle Squadron, the 355th Fighter Group (355th FG) known for its intense combat activity and high number of kills, the 361st Fighter Group (361st FG) with its distinctive yellow-nosed aircraft, and the 479th Fighter Group (479th FG), which joined the fighting later but quickly gained respect. Each of these groups had their own tactical procedures, colour markings and combat history, making them an attractive subject for modellers and historians alike.
Eduard's 1:48 scale limited edition "Mighty Eight: 65th Fighter Wing" kit offers decals for machines from all four of these groups, allowing you to build a model with an authentic historical background and personal story of a particular pilot or mission. The 1:48 scale provides ample room for detailed cockpit, engine compartment and armament, while remaining practical for regular display placement. The P-51D lends itself to both beginners with the expanded availability of reference materials, and advanced builders who can apply techniques to highlight paneling, wear, and operational soiling appropriate to intensive combat duty over Europe. The package does not include paint or adhesives needed for assembly.
