In early 1945, Germany’s Type XXI was the most advanced submarine in the world. Thanks to a number of technical innovations, it could remain submerged almost constantly, as its diesel engines drew in the necessary fresh air through a snorkel. It had a streamlined shape specially designed for underwater movement, and its battery capacity was up to three times greater, allowing it to travel underwater at an astonishing speed of 17 knots. Other innovations included, for example, quiet electric motors for silent navigation, highly sensitive navigation instruments, and turrets equipped with 2-cm anti-aircraft guns.
