The T-54A was a modernized variant of the first postwar Soviet T-54 medium tank, which entered production in the mid-1950s. This version was the first to be equipped with a gun stabilizer in the vertical plane, an improved NBC protection system and upgraded communications equipment. Its ruggedness, simplicity and effective armament made the T-54A the basis for the development of later versions, and its design influenced tanks around the world.
