The M4 Sherman (official U.S. Army designation: Medium Tank, M4; British designation: Cruiser Tank, General Sherman) was the most famous American medium tank during World War II and shortly thereafter. The first prototype was completed on September 2, 1941. It featured a side hatch, which was omitted from production models. The T6 was standardized as the M4, and production began in October 1941. It was named after U.S. General Sherman. It was produced in enormous numbers, which was fitting given its shortcomings. The weaknesses of the early Shermans were their relatively underpowered gun and insufficient armor.
