During World War II, the basic design of the Supermarine Spitfire underwent constant development, illustrating its strength and adaptability. Ultimately, more than 20,000 aircraft were produced in 24 different variants. The Mk. V variant was actually something of a stopgap version of the aircraft that fought during the Battle of Britain, but with 6,487 units produced, it ultimately became the most widely produced Spitfire variant.
