Tank riders - soldiers transported on tanks - were a common feature of the British Army's combat operations in north-west Europe during the final phase of the Second World War. This meant that soldiers were moved quickly into combat zones, often directly on the hull of tanks, so that they could intervene immediately in engagements. Such situations were especially common during liberation operations in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands from the summer of 1944.
